I had already been out to Swan Lake Christian Camp a few weekends that summer running long runs of 16-20 miles as strength work for cross country. On one of those weekends, a staff member said to me that I might as well run a marathon. I agreed to the idea, and drew up the first route on a large drawing pad in the staff lounge that was affectionately called “The List.” I called it the “first annual” more jokingly than not, with the crazy notion that I would make an annual journey to SLCC every year to log in 26.2 miles on the open roads where I fell in love with running. Brookings Marathon & Half Marathon, Marathon Relay Brookings Marathon & Half Marathon, Marathon Relay Marathon Details Brookings Marathon & Half Marathon, Marathon Relay, 5K Brookings, SD USA May 11, 2013 Official Race Website: http://www.brookingsmarathon.com The eastern South Dakota community of Brookings has hosted a marathon since the summer of 1970. Just as the course has changed a few times in the past 40 years, the racing experience continues to evolve. Today's event has beautiful neighborhoods, hundreds of wonderful volunteers, and a great post-race party for you and your family and friends. Review our website and drop us an email if you have any questions. You can also read more about what past runners have to say at the links below. News: •SAVE THE DATE! Marathon : Course Information Course Video | Course Map | Course Commentary The Annual Brookings Marathon is a Boston qualifier, USATF Certification #SD 08006TLB. USATF sanction pending. Our course takes runners through the best rural America has to offer: Parks, Gardens, Bike Paths, Historic Districts and South Dakota State University. Most of the course is asphalt, with grass adjoining the pavement in many areas for runners who prefer an alternative surface. The course is flat, with a gentle grade thrown in here and there to keep things interesting. With the exception of Larson Hill (a 35' high hill that you could walk up and down in a minute) the entire course stays between 1595 and 1680 feet of elevation and never changes more than 40 feet over a single mile. Because our course traverses the entire city, closing roads during the race would result in frustrated motorists and an increased safety risk. Accordingly, roads are open during the race, with volunteers controlling traffic at major intersections. Traffic in Brookings is light on a Saturday morning, but as in any road race, you are ultimately responsible for your own safety. Use of headphones and other devices that could distract you from traffic is discouraged. In the interest of runner safety, dogs, bikes, strollers and rollerblades are not allowed on the course. The marathon course is open (water, first aid, traffic control provided) based on a 6 hour pace (13:45 per mile). Participants who are proceeding at a rate slower than this pace may be asked to leave the course for their own safety. The Brookings Marathon, Half Marathon and Relay will be held on May 11, 2013. Stay tuned for more information in the coming months. NV

Deasdwood MichelsonTrail Marathon and Half Maratho Deasdwood MichelsonTrail Marathon and Half Maratho June 7, 2009 A word from the Race Director: There are a lot of marathons out there claiming to be the “most scenic,” and all of them have legitimate reasons for such a claim. None of them, however, are run through the sacred land of the Lakota Sioux, and finish in a town that is an Historic Landmark... that’s right, the entire town of Deadwood, South Dakota is part of our authentic American heritage. All race directors think they have something special to offer you, and I am no different. Our calling card is the awesome beauty of God’s magnificent creation, and a piece of Americana, all on the same day, in the same place. COME RUN WITH US... MAKE A LIFELONG MEMORY! - Jerry Dunn THE RACE COURSE DESCRIPTION: The Marathon is a point to point course, beginning in the old mining town of Rochford; home of the MoonShine Gulch Saloon, the sMall of America, and the University of Rochford. Scotty Roberts 5K Scotty Roberts 5K Named for a running icon in the Brookings Community, the Scotty Roberts 5K takes place the evening before the marathon. Dr. Roberts ran before running was even considered good for you, and his efforts helped "pave the ways" of Brookings running over many years. This event provides a great chance to get in a friendly race and still volunteer or cheer for your favorite runner on Saturday. Registration, packet pickup, and the meal all take place at the start and finish of the 5K. Taking in the sights, sounds, and tastes of marathon weekend couldn't be easier. SD
Brookings Marathon and Half Marathon Brookings Marathon and Half Marathon Run past a creek, a path through the arboretum, the historic district complete with beautifully restored turn-of-the-century homes? And what if friends and neighbors helped out with the race until there were more volunteers than runners? And what if the whole marathon took place within a small community—so your family could easily move about and cheer for you? The miles would melt away, and you'd be at the Brookings Marathon.
