We’ve all heard of Punxsutawney Phil, the little furry guy in Pennsylvania who comes out, sees his shadow, and declares six more weeks of winter. Then there’s Augustus T. Groundhog, better known as Grand Rapids Gus. He’s Phil’s much more interesting cousin. Unlike Phil, who it seems can only see shadows, Gus has much better eyesight and can look at a calendar on February 2 and know that spring doesn’t start for six weeks. Gus suggested that instead of lamenting over six more weeks of winter, we should EMBRACE the cold and snow and do something fun.
And so, the Groundhog Day Marathon was born.

2013 Memories
26.2 MILES...Come and Leave your cares at the door...
You have better be in shape if your going to tackle this one...this race is not for beginners. But if your up for a challenge and we do mean UP!!!!, if your looking for a GREAT workout, or are just One Tough Old Fart...then this OLD FARTS MARATHON will not disappoint YOU!
This years course will be two 13.1 mile loops. It will include all the same fun as last year... but we are adding a new twist called the JOURNEY THRU OZ so as you go up Dorothy's Ridge(yes you are leaving KANSAS!) you will get to experience what we call WITCH HILL although you may call it some other choice words when you get done with it... and the Old Fart Race would not be the same if you didn't get to run the stretch of trail that we will call The LARRY...because "it's just plain Scary" so Lace them up tight cause you will be in for a bumpy ride through the mud and then after you get through the mud then the real "Nose Bleed...aka check with your doctor before attempting... Type of Hils" begin. We name the hills so you won't have any problem recalling them after the race. First you will hit the ED...it's half the FRED so if you dislike the ED, then you'll dread the FRED.
Then you come to the FRED...a hill so big that you will feel your heart pounding out of your chest by the time you reach the top! Then it's on to "Little Chuck"...named after Chuck Norris...a hill that he would be proud of.
Then after Little Chuck you limp through the nice section of the course...wooded trails that flow nice...by then you have definitely earned your race t-shirt and know that the OLD FARTS COURSE is no joke. So when the finisher medal says ONE TOUGH MARATHON...we mean it!

General DWD Course Information: It's run on single-track, gravel road, grass, paved trail, golf course cart paths and even some off-trail. (Great & tedious detail is available in the Leg Description page of each event...)
Is the trail as tough as advertised? Yes and No. It’s no run down a nature trail (but at times it is just that!) Some big hills but no supplemental oxygen is needed. Our descriptions are a disclaimer. All in all, a great run in a beautiful environment...with stupid spots to make it memorable, but it is a run, not an obstacle mud run race..
The individual events will give you a beautiful trail run experience, the 10k will beat you to a pulp and make the warrior/mudder kind of races seem hokey and artificial. The DWD Devil's Lake 10K will prove that the extremes that lie out there in nature are where it's at!
(As always, we keep tweekin' the course to perfection, due to your comments and suggestions, we continue to polish this diamond in the rough. Not to worry, most will be similar to previous years! Yes; we've changed the course the night before, and very occasionally during, the race!)
By the way....when you're out on the trail and you see a sign that says "

Porcupine Mountains are one of the largest tracts of wilderness east of the Mississippi River. The Porcupine Mts overlook Lake Superior, the largest fresh water lake on Earth. The coastline is remote and rugged. The marathon course includes some of the most remarkable single track in the midwest and takes runners past tranquil and remote Mirror Lake and along the classic Escarpment Trail where you can almost reach out and touch soaring hawks as you overlook Lake of the Clouds. This event completes a trio of deeply inspiring trail marathon hosted by Great Lakes Endurance (Waugoshance, Grand Island, and Porcupine Mtns) offering runners the best of what Michigan and the Upper Great Lakes have to offer.r

Marathon
The course follows the perimeter trail of the island counterclockwise up past Murray Bay and Duck Lake. At three miles the course heads eastward into the Tombolo, up into the island's thumb and then back along Trout Bay where runners can enjoy one of the most spectacular stretches of shoreline anywhere in the Great Lakes. Runners then ascend up the eastern cliffs of the island which treat runners to views of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The northern half of the island features 300 ft colored Jacobsville sandstone cliffs and the remote and exquisitely beautiful North Beach. The return trail on the island’s western shore features remarkable vistas of Lake Superior. Much of the trail is shaded by lush hardwood forests. Exposed sections (atop cliffs) blanket runners with cool breezes off of Lake Superior. Trail includes single track, two track, and narrow dirt roads. The course is well marked with colored flags, directional arrows, and mile markers.
The marathon will have a two wave start. All runners who expect to finish in over 5 hours will start in wave 1 (6:00 a.m.).
